Die JSON-Datei des Beispiels „Absatzeinzüge und -abstände“. Dieselben zwei Absätze auf sechs Arten: wie sie kommen, eine eingerückte erste Zeile, eine herausgerückte erste Zeile, der Raum darüber und darunter, ein Blocksatzblock, dessen letzte Zeile zentriert ist, und wo die erste und die letzte Zeile in ihrem Rechteck sitzen. Eine zweite Seite setzt sie auf vier weitere Arten: zwei andere Regeln für die erste und letzte Zeile, nur umrandete Buchstaben und durch eine Linie darum verstärkte Buchstaben.

Diese Datei ist eine Anfrage: Eine Anwendung sendet sie über das Netz an den Server, der das PDF erzeugt und zurücksendet. Sie erzeugt dieselbe Seite wie die Rust- und die Python-Fassung dieses Beispiels. Eine Anfrage nennt jede Datei, die sie verwendet, nie ihren Inhalt; der Aufruf trägt die Anfrage und die Dateien zusammen. Eine Schrift, die der Server bereits vorhält, etwa DejaVuSans, wird ohne Anhang genannt. Senden Sie die Anfrage an die Adresse, die die API-Seite angibt.

Die Bibliothek misst drei Zahlen an den gerade gesetzten Zeilen — den Raum, den eine Überschrift einnimmt, den Raum, den der Block darunter füllt, und wo dieser Block daher beginnt —, und die Anfrage wiederholt diese drei als hineingeschriebene Zahlen, sodass jedes Rechteck hier aus dem zurückgerechnet ist, was die Bibliothek gemessen hat. Der sechste Block verlangt von der Bibliothek eine letzte Zeile, die die darunter hängenden Buchstaben freilässt; diese Einstellung gibt es über das Netz nicht, und sie zeichnet nichts — sie geht nur in die Höhe ein, die der Block meldet. Der Rahmen unter diesem Block wird in der Höhe gezeichnet, die die Bibliothek gemeldet hat, sodass beide Dateien denselben Rahmen zeichnen. Unter den sechs Blöcken steht ein Satz dreimal in einem Kasten, der höher ist als er — an seiner Oberkante, zentriert und an seiner Unterkante: Die Bibliothek fragt jeweils, wo der Block beginnt, und die Anfrage gibt die Oberkante an, die sich aus dieser Antwort ergibt. Die sechs Formen selbst und wo jede Zeile jedes Blocks fällt, sind so oder so dieselben. Die zweite Seite setzt dieselben Absätze auf vier weitere Arten, jede auf beiden Seiten mit denselben Begriffen verlangt, und auch ihre Rahmen stehen in den Höhen, die die Bibliothek meldet, übernommen.

Wofür dieses Beispiel da ist

Was eine professionell wirkende Seite von einer anderen unterscheidet, ist selten die Schrift. Es ist der Raum um die Absätze: wie weit die erste Zeile eingerückt ist, wie viel Luft zwischen zwei Blöcken liegt, ob der linke Rand einer Liste hängt oder bündig steht. Dieselben zwei Absätze sind hier zehnmal gesetzt, über zwei Seiten, sodass sich die Wirkung jeder dieser Zahlen einzeln sehen lässt.
